SmartFirmer measures soil moisture, temperature and organic matter. It’s a seed firmer-sensor that measures the amount of moisture available to the seed, so you can adjust your depth correctly and know you will have a consistent crop stand.
Know the Seed’s Environment
Digging a few seeds per field doesn’t give you a complete picture of whether your depth setting is correct.
Seeds need to absorb moisture to germinate, but not all soils will provide the same amount of moisture to seeds. SmartFirmer measures seed available moisture and displays it in the cab so that you can adjust depth and make decisions to ensure that your seed germinates consistently. Less than 30% furrow moisture? A change is needed to ensure each seed germinates uniformly.
Adjust to the Furrow
SmartFirmer not only measures the moisture available to the seed, but it also measures the temperature of the soil as you plant and how much residue is in the seed furrow. Knowing the temperature allows you to make decisions about planting early in the morning or after the sun goes down, ensuring emergence isn’t delayed by chilled seeds. Knowing residue levels allows for adjustments to row cleaners, in order to avoid residue being in contact with the seed, causing late germination.
